"Tea Drinking in Autumn" (1999) by Lidia Kozlova is a richly textured painting of the colorful and mythical world of Russian folk culture. At the center of this lively composition is a cozy wooden hut—a traditional Izba, where a man with a distinctive beard and a woman in a colorful dress—symbolic representations of Kozlova and her husband—enjoy a moment of peace while drinking tea. Their detailed clothing not only identifies them but also brings their personal stories into the painting, respecting the Hasidic tradition of not explicitly depicting individuals, as seen in Marc Chagall's work.

Surrounding the intimate central scene is a depiction of traditional Russian life and folklore. The background architecture, with domes and bell towers, is reminiscent of Russian churches and adds national identity to the scene. On the roof of the Izba, various animals and birds sit, bringing the picture to life, typical of folk art. These animals and birds over the roof add life and continuity to the scene, common in folk art where animals often play significant anthropomorphic roles.

"Tea Drinking in Autumn" is a vibrant collage full of life and movement. Kozlova's ability to weave personal symbolism with cultural iconography makes this work a fascinating discovery. This painting not only promises joy in its depiction but also the happiness that Kozlova attributed to her works. It is a treasure for anyone who loves tradition and the magic of storytelling.
